The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Monday 5th July, at St Jean Street, Belle Mare where the house of Asson family was totally reduced to ashes. Clovis Asson and Julie Asson, aged 11 years and six years respectively died charred. They slept in the disaster. The circumstances of the tragedy are still not known, but authorities rejected the theory of a crime.

The father of two children, Stephane Asson is grief-stricken. "I was awakened by the cries of my children. My house was already in the grip of flames at that time. My wife and I were then in the room next door, but unfortunately we could not save our children, "he says. Slightly burnt to the head and chest, the victims' father said that "it all happened so fast."

"When I awoke, I was surprised by the flames which were spreading through the room, where I was," says one of the aunts of the victims who witnessed the drama. She claims not to know how the fire could occur. However, she says that the fire was possibly caused by an anti mosquito which was lit in the room.

"My first reaction on seeing the fire was to go through the bedroom window, because it was my only way," said the aunt of the victims. Moreover, she could save two of his nephews, one aged seven months and another eight years before leaving the room. "I saw Clovis and Julie on their bed trying all their best to escape the flames, but unfortunately they failed in their attempts and died." she says.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire had already destroyed much of the house, whose roof is built in metal sheets and wood.

During the fire, there were nine people in total in this house of six rooms. The seven others were urgently carried to hospital in Flacq.
